Netball: UNF Reveals Plans for Commonwealth Games
The Uganda Netball Federation and her Board of Trustee Members held a press briefing at Serena Hotel Kampala on Thursday to reveal the plans for Commonwealth Games set to start in July 2022.
For starters, the She Cranes, Uganda’s Netball national team qualified to Commonwealth Games 2022 after winning the 2021 Pent Series and becoming the 1st runners up in the Africa Netball Championship held in Windhoek in Namibia last year.
To maintain their spot, the sixth position and maybe to move a place in rankings on world scene, Uganda Netball Federation revealed their plans for She Cranes as they wait to represent Uganda in Commonwealth Games to be held in Birmingham England this year.
According to UNF President, Hon. Kityo Sarah Babirye revealed that it was in plan to prolong the league to keep the girls fit as well as hosting East Africa Club Championships as well as having regional tours for she Cranes before heading to Birmingham.
“We want our girls to be fit until they reach in the Games, that’s why we prolonged the league,it has just ended, now we are heading to East Africa Championship we are going to hold here in Kampala and those girls in these clubs are the same.” Said President before adding. ” After club Championship, we are going to have regional tours then when shall take these girls to camp before heading to England. Please Ugandans, don’t fear, the girls are in good shape and we are keeping them on top.”
Though they haven’t received any coin for preparations from the government with two months to finals, Kityo asserted that their budget is over 280M shillings but they will not sit back waiting for the government, they will keep pushing until the government money will find them.
At the same event, the federation revealed it’s forthcoming events, that is; the Awarding ceremony, scheduled for 26th April 2022 at Serena Hotel Kampala.
The East Africa Club Championships, where Uganda is the host, they will be held at Kamwokya Community Sports Ground between 8th and 15th May 2022.
The regional tours, She Cranes will be moving transversing to different regions and they do start on 16th May 2022.
The other nearby event is the fundraising dinner scheduled for 24th June 2022 at Serena Hotel Kampala and President Museveni is expected to be the Guest of Honor, this is according to Chairperson Board of Trustees, Hon. Margret Nantongo Zziwa.
The World Cup Qualifiers in South Africa scheduled for 22nd to 27th August 2022.
