Masaza Cup 2026: Mawogola Optimistic of Knockout Qualification

Mawogola has declared its ambition to make a deep run in the 2026 Masaza Cup after being drawn into what many observers consider one of the tournament’s fair groups.

Speaking after the draws held on Tuesday at Bulange Mengo, Mawogola Team chairman Uthman Kateregga Mwanadamu expressed confidence in the team’s chances, saying the county is determined to return to the latter stages of the competition.

“I had taken rest for two years because I was very active in politics but I am back,” Kateregga said.

He added that the draw gives Mawogola a realistic opportunity to progress beyond the group stages for the first time in years.

“The draws show that for the first time after years we’re going to make it out of the group,” he noted.

Mawogola has been placed in the competitive Muganzirwazza group alongside 2025 losing finalists Ssingo, Bugerere, Butambala, Kooki and Kabula.

Despite the difficult opposition, Kateregga remained optimistic.

“According to the group and the teams it has, we’re much confident that we’re making it out of the group to the quarterfinals and pave another way to reach other levels,” he said.

“We promise the Mawogola people that this time the trophy is coming to Mawogola.”

The last time Mawogola reached the quarterfinals was in 2020 during the tournament staged at the FUFA Technical Centre in Njeru under coach Simon Ddunga.

This time, the county heads into the competition under coach Mugagga, whom officials and supporters believe can guide the team to greater success.

The 2026 Masaza Cup will kick off on June 13, with defending champions Buweekula hosting Kyaddondo in the opening fixture.
