KCCA To Add More 35000 Street Lights in Kampala
The Kampala Capital City Authority have secured funding to do street lighting in the City, Acting Director and Technical Services of the Authority, Engineer Justus Akankwasa confirms.
While addressing press at Uganda Media Centre on Monday, Akankwasa revealed that the Authority have secured 77M Euros that will be focusing on installing 35,000 lights in the City.
“We have secured funding from French government to do street lighting in the City. We have received amount to a tune of 77M Euros, it will be focusing on installing 35000 lights in the City.” Said Eng. Akankwasa before adding. “That is a big step, currently the lights in the City don’t exceed 6000, that will definitely will improve on economic growth, through increasing productivity as well as security.”
About the issue of potholes in the City, Akankwasa asserted that the government is already in talks with the government of United Kingdom an going to embark on KCCA roads and bridges project.
On road construction and planning, Kampala Capital City Authority through the help of government of Uganda has got USD 288M from the Africa Development Bank to help improve road transport and ease congestion in the city by upgrading 22 road junctions .
According to Justus Akankwasa, this will enhance the drainage capacity of the city to mitigate street flooding in low lying areas.
Akankwasa adds that the project will improve 69.7km of roads in all divisions of Kampala,134 km of non motorised traffic facilities,walk ways,cycling trucks,construct commercial vehicle parking places,bus depots,30 public toilets,6 Public markets along project roads for women vendors.
“The government has already secured funding from Africa Development Bank to the tune of 288M USD and this will make us move an extra mile.
The planning for this funding, we are going to improve road transport and ease congestion in the capital by upgrading 22 pad junctions, a network of 69.7KM of roads.
Mean while Akankwasa says KCCA has collaborated with Uganda railway corporation to revitalize the passenger train service between Kampala and Namanve.
