Skating Club of Kampala, Aga Khan Primary School Launch Campaign, Skating Beyond Streets
Skating is an Olympic sport and it’s a recognized sport in Uganda but the public doesn’t take it serious because it’s more on the streets.
Basing on that fact, Kampala Skating Club came up with a program dubbed, school skating and skating beyond streets and they have started with Aga Khan Primary School in Kampala.
According to Lumala Vincent Reagan, the founder and chairperson of Skating Club of Kampala revealed that they want to reshape the sport in the country and recruit younger ones into the game and give it another look from the old one.
They have started with demonstrating the game to the kids on Thursday at the school.
“We’re demonstrating and trying to re-shape the skating, redirecting the younger generation that’s why we’re into schools, this program is called school skating program, we’re here at Aga Khan and other schools.” Says Lumala Vincent Reagan.
“We’re trying to recruit new skaters into the program and we’re focusing on those younger people to get to know how to do skating at national and international level.” Lumala Vincent Reagan of Skating Club of Kampala Said.
“And today, we have been teaching them how to use the safety gears and learn more about the sport.”
“Basically we’re trying to redirect the younger generation because most people outside there think skating is not a sport, it’s just for streets, so we are trying to focus on the younger ones.”
The head of sports at Aga Khan Primary School, Gorreth Nalubega revealed as to why they brought skating at their school.
“We have invited these Skates people so that the kids can get another sport they can join, so we called them to do a demonstration to the kids and at the end of the day, kids loved it and the teachers.” Says Sports teacher at Aga Khan Primary School, Gorreth Nalubega.
“It’s a good sport though it’s risky and has challenges, and since we are in the road safety week, the sport is dangerous and it’s more on roads, so we called them to teach the kids about the road safety and how to dodge those challenges on the road.”
“Yes of course we shall carry on with it because the kids loved it and I hope, next term, we shall have many kids in the Skating Club.” She added.
One of the best skaters at school and a primary four pupil, Joy Tendo asserted why she loves skating.
“I choose to be a skater because I saw people who do it, look professional, so my dream is to be a skater and a professional one” says Joy Tendo, one of the kid skaters at Aga Khan Primary School.
