Girls shone at the just concluded Kampala Junior Chess Open that was held from Friday 3rd to Saturday 4th June 2022 at Kembabazi Restaurant in Naguru taking home several trophies and medals.
In the Under 9 category, Torana Tosha was the Best Girl in that category with 3pts. Kizito Jayden emerged overall winner in the category winning with 6pts while Omara Benjamin came second with 4.5pts and Oyang Sankara third with 4pts.
In the Under 11 category, Atubet Talia was the best girl with 5pts while Javuru Kennedy was the overall winner with 7.5pts. Omara Samora came second with 6.5pts while Mawejje Jethro was third with 6.0pts.
In the Under 13 category Beinomugisha was the overall winner with 7.5pts while Ndawula Jonathan finished second with 6pts and Nsubuga Jayson finished 3rd with 4.5pts.
Fide Arbiter and Instructor Ssonko Matthias said the tournament was a success and thanked the parents for supporting their children to play chess saying it helps develop their strategic and problem solving skills.
“It’s been a wonderful two-days of chess and the kids had a lot of fun and improved their game. Chess is actually a very good game for children even as young as 4 years and I encourage parents to take up the game because it will help children develop their strategic and problem solving skills and even improve their academic performance,” Ssonko said.
“We intend to make it a biennial tournament and the next edition should be taking place sometime in August,” Ssonko added.
