Gomba Set Sights on Sixth Crown After Unveiling 2026 Masaza Cup Squad

GOMBA — Five-time Buganda Masaza Cup champions Gomba Lions have officially unveiled a strong 31-man squad ahead of the 2026 Masaza Cup campaign, with club leaders and fans rallying behind the team’s quest for a historic sixth title.
The colorful unveiling ceremony was held at Kabulasoke PTC Playground, the team’s home ground, and attracted a large crowd of supporters, local leaders, and dignitaries eager to witness the launch of the new squad.
Team Manager Resty Mbatidde Namugema announced the players before an audience that included Gomba County Chief (Kitunzi) Owek. Fredrick William Mugabi, team patron Mwesigye Daniel, and several other distinguished guests.
In a symbolic gesture of support and expectation, Owek. Mugabi later handed the team flag to club chairperson Jane Namatovu, urging the players and technical team to deliver a sixth Masaza Cup crown for Gomba.
The unveiling event was preceded by an entertaining friendly match between Gomba Lions and reigning Masaza Cup champions Buweekula. The visitors took an early lead in the first half through a well-taken free kick from Faisal Bumba, carrying a 1-0 advantage into the break.
However, Gomba responded strongly after halftime. A series of tactical substitutions shifted momentum in their favor, and the hosts eventually found an equalizer through Owen Mawejje. The midfielder finished off a well-worked move after receiving a clever chest pass from substitute Jackson Ssemugabi, ensuring the match ended level.
Gomba will compete in the highly competitive Masengere Group, where they have been drawn alongside Mawokota, Kyaggwe, Busiro, Ssese, and Bulemeezi.
The record champions will begin their 2026 campaign away to Busiro on June 21, a fixture that will provide an early test of their title credentials.
With a balanced blend of experience and youthful talent across all departments, Gomba Lions will be hoping their latest squad can write another successful chapter in the county’s rich Masaza Cup history and bring the coveted trophy back to Kabulasoke.
