From Kibuli to Kitende: A Look Back at Uganda’s School Football Champions Ahead of Lira Final

The rich history of the Uganda Secondary Schools Sports Association (USSSA) National Boys Football Championship will gain another chapter tomorrow in Lira City when Amus College School takes on Bukedea Comprehensive School in the 2026 final.

As the tournament reaches its climax in Lira, attention has once again turned to the schools that have shaped Uganda’s most prestigious post-primary football competition over the last four decades.

This year’s final carries special significance for Amus College School, who are returning to the title match for the second time in three years. The school narrowly missed out on glory in 2024 when they finished as losing finalists during the championship hosted in Masaka, where St Julian High School Mukono emerged champions.

Amus College School earned another shot at history after eliminating record champions St Mary’s SS Kitende 4-1 on penalties following a goalless draw in the semifinal played in Lira today. Bukedea Comprehensive School secured their place in the final after edging Kyadondo Secondary School 1-0.

The championship has over the years produced several dominant dynasties, with St Mary’s SS Kitende and Kibuli SS standing tall as the most successful schools in the competition’s history.

St Mary’s SS Kitende established themselves as a modern powerhouse especially between 2004 and 2023, producing multiple national titles and several Uganda Cranes stars. Kibuli SS, one of the country’s traditional football institutions, dominated much of the 1990s and early 2000s.

The championship has also witnessed the rise of newer football forces such as Buddo SS, St Julian High Mukono and now Bukedea Comprehensive School and Amus College School.
