Festival Season: Tighten Your Pockets or No going Back to Village, Public Transporters Hike Fares
With only two days to the 2022 Christmas celebrations, the number of people traveling to and from villages increased.
With that background, the public transporters have also increased the fares especially to those traveling from Town to Villages for festival celebrations.
The bus and taxi operators say, they have increased the fares because of high prices of fuel and lack of passengers in villages coming to Kampala.
While addressing media on Thursday in Kampala, Muhammad Ssempijja the driver and leader at Namayiba taxi park says drivers have only increased slightly in fares of far places of the country to allow drivers meet vehicle expenses because when they take passengers in villages, vehicles come back empty yet they use fuel.
Ssempijja has indicated that currently from Namayiba taxi part to Lira passengers pay ugx 50,000 from ugx35000, Kigumba ugx30,000 from ugx 25000, Amurata ugx30,000 from ugx 25000 ,Nakasongola, Luwero,Ssemuto and Kapeeka remained to usual ugx 7000 to ugx 8000.
However he has advised police and sister security agencies enforcing safety on roads to desist from selective enforcement such that people’s lives are saved.
“Don’t put much emphasis on only taxi and buses, yes you will be helping us not causing accidents and saving our lives and those of our passengers but even others cause accidents, for example, that lorry driver who killed Serere MP, he might have at least two problems, either he was sleep driving or drunk, so don’t be selective in enforcing the regulations.” Says Ssempijja.
Meanwhile Sharita Hamibu Manager Global Coaches says they have also increased slightly Now from Kampala to Kabale is ugx 60,000 from usual ugx40,000 , Kisoro ugx 60,000 from ugx 40,000, Mbarara ugx 30,000 from ugx20,000 among others.
