Electoral Commission Unveils New Headquarters Ahead of 2026 Nominations

The Independent Electoral Commission (IEC) has received a new permanent home in Lweza, Ssaabagabo, Makindye Division, after the National Housing and Construction Company (NHCC) officially handed over a 3.5-acre site that will host the 2026 presidential nominations.
The facility, built within just six weeks after the July 30 groundbreaking, is expected to improve the Commission’s efficiency and strengthen its operational independence as Uganda prepares for the next general elections.
NHCC Chief Executive Officer Kenneth Kaijuka hailed the milestone as “historic,” emphasizing the teamwork that made the rapid delivery possible.
“This was a tall order for us as National Housing, but with collective support, we delivered. Today we hand over the site for nominations, and once the exercise is concluded, we shall reclaim it to prepare for the declaration of results,” Kaijuka said.
The facility is fully paved and equipped with electricity, solar lighting, parking facilities, an ICT hub for internet access, and CCTV surveillance to ensure security and smooth operations during the high-profile electoral process.
Electoral Commission Chairperson, Justice Simon Byabakama, described the handover as a significant step toward strengthening Uganda’s democratic institutions.
“The choice of this venue is not only to host nominations but also to become the permanent home of the Electoral Commission. This project confirms the government’s commitment to safeguarding democratic processes and ensuring that the voice of the people is respected,” Byabakama noted.
Works and Transport Minister Gen. Katumba Wamala also commended NHCC for the timely delivery, pledging to recommend the company for future projects.
“I think National Housing has done a commendable job. From now on, we shall not doubt your capacity and ability. When another challenge arises, I should be able to recommend you,” Katumba said.
He further tasked the Uganda Police Force to design a comprehensive traffic management plan to ease access to the new site, noting that Lweza offers better road connectivity compared to the Commission’s former Kyambogo grounds.
The unveiling of the Lweza facility marks a turning point for the IEC as it consolidates its operations under one roof and prepares to deliver a more efficient and credible electoral process in 2026.
