The countdown is on to the Association of Uganda University Sports (AUUS) elections, set for September 26, 2025 at Uganda Christian University, Mukono. Among the big names vying for top leadership positions is Martha Soigi, the Kampala University senior sports tutor and lecturer, who is contesting for the post of Vice President.
Popularly dubbed the “Full Package”, Soigi is set to face off with Nsubuga Mustapha, the former Mpigi District sports officer and current Mountains of the Moon University sports tutor, in what promises to be a keenly contested race.
With a rich sporting background stretching from her school days at Iganga SS, Gombe SS, Kyambogo University, and Nkumba University, Soigi brings a wealth of experience to the table. She is a versatile sportswoman—having played for the She Cranes (netball), the Gazelles (basketball), and currently featuring for KCCA Leopards. Beyond the court, she has served as a sports administrator for over a decade.
Her trophy cabinet is equally impressive. She has lifted national netball titles with NIC Netball Club, celebrated basketball championships with KCCA Leopards, and won handball honors with the Uganda Prisons Services team. As a sports administrator at Kampala University, she has overseen multiple successes across disciplines.
Speaking about her bid, Soigi said she feels ready to take the next step in her leadership journey:
“I have grown through the ranks to where I am now. I believe it is time to bring fresh knowledge, ideas, and skills to further grow our association.”
One of her key priorities is to increase women’s involvement in sports administration and participation.
“Apart from our outgoing president, Penninah Aligawesa Kabenge, the Association has been dominated by men. We need to groom more ladies into leadership. That’s one of my agendas—having more women in administration and giving girls more playing opportunities. For example, we can introduce girls’ football alongside the university league for boys, even as curtain-raisers for main matches.”
Soigi maintains that she has practical ideas to drive AUUS and elite sport in Uganda to greater heights.
As the elections draw closer, all eyes will be on Mukono to see whether the “Full Package” can secure a seat at the top table of university sports governance.
