A podium Finish for Ndejje, Makerere & MUBS as 12th Edition of E.A University Games Climaxes
The hosts Ndejje University, Makerere University and Makerere University Business School (MUBS) dominated the medal tallies of the 12th edition of the East Africa University games that climaxed on Wednesday.
The side that had the biggest number of entries (athletes), over 240 athletes, Ndejje University grabbed the most medals in the just concluded East Africa University games, the host collected 124 medals and it was the overall winner, taking the championship for the 7th time.
Ndejje scooped 59 gold medals, 39 silver and 26 bronze medals.
The side was followed by Makerere University who won 68 medals in total, 21 gold, 20 silver and 27 bronze medals.
Makerere University Business School (MUBS) came third out of the 25 Universities that took part in this year’s edition, the Nakawa based side walked away with 15 gold medals, 6 silver and 19 bronze medals, totalling to 40 medals.
Kenyatta University came in the 4th position with 9 goal medals, 21 silver and 33 bronze medals, went back to Kenya with a total of 63 medals.
The closing event was graced by the State Minister for Sports Hon. Peter Ogwang as a guest of honor who urged Universities especially the Uganda based not to using none students in the University competitions because the act in the long run limits the development of sports in the country.
“I congratulate Ndejje for hosting a successful event, I congratulate all the winners and the participants but I ask the Universities not to use none students in these games, and if a University is caught I ask let it be banned for one, two or three years while not taking part in the games with a huge fine, don’t fine the tutor or student, but a whole University.” Says Minister while giving his speech at the event.
“Use of none students in these games, hinder the development of the sport in the country, you can’t get the Cheptegei’s, you can’t the product for national team that can represent the country, so avoid none students in these games.” He concluded.
At the same event, the area member of Parliament (Katikamu South) Hon. Kirumira Hassan Lukalidde asserted that Sports is a unifying factor and leads to development.
“Universities investing in Sports is a good sign towards the development of our sports and education and on a broader picture, sports helps to unite East Community, and as leaders we use sports to bring our people together, it’s that even Universities come together and compete because this strengthen our integration as East Community.” Says the Area member of Parliament.
According to organizers, the event attracted at least 3000 participants and officials.
