Sports: Netball League Called off, Wait For Next Year

It went into record books that the year 2020, the Uganda National netball league was not held due to COVID-19 pandemic.

Following the team managers’ meeting with the Uganda National Netball Federation held on Thursday afternoon at Lugogo- Kampala, the top stakeholders of Netball in the country suggested to call off the league and prepare for next year.

It should be recalled that the 2020 league was scheduled to throw off on Saturday 5th December2020 at Kibuli Children School court, but two days to its commence, it was postponed due to majority clubs failing to meet Standard Operating Procedures of Ministry of Health on COVID-19.

By Thursday 10th December 2020 when the meeting was called, it was only two clubs (Weyonje and Police Netball clubs) that were done with COVID-19 testing. So basing on fail of majority clubs to fulfil the requirements, they decided to call of the league until next year 2021.

“In the meeting as Club managers, we saw it important for the league to be called off, most Clubs failed to fulfil the requirements and they are too many and costly we can’t manage them in this short period remaining to end the calendar year.” Denis Mpoza, Manager Blue Stars told this website.

The federation’s assistant general secretary Madam Alice Alweny, who chaired the meeting, revealed to this website that it wasn’t the federation’s decision to call off the league but it was a collective effort.

“It’s true we are not to have a league this year, we shall have it next Year.

It wasn’t the decision by the federation but in the meeting we had with the club managers, we saw it important to call the league off, because they still have a lot missing as far as following the ministry of Health guidelines are concerned. So with few remaining days to end the year we decided not to hold the league this year.” She said.

Alweny also hinted to the federation writing to government through National Council of sports to see that they get a financial help because currently the federation is down.
