Now You Can Use Covidex, NDA Approves the on market Drug
The National Drug Authority has approved Covidex a local herbal medicine as a supporting treatment in management of viral infections, Covid-19 inclusive.
On Tuesday, 29, June, 2021, the Authority responsible in regulating the standards of medicines and drugs to used in Uganda, NDA has finally approved the herbal medicine that people widely been using as the COVID-19 virus cure and preventive drug, the Covidex.
According to the Authority, the found out that the drug is not a cure of the virus but it is a supporting treatment in management of the disease and they have recommended the public to use it basing on the guidance of the professional medics.
“National Drug Authority informs the public tht after a record time of 14 days of engagement with the innovator and assessments of the product information, Covidex has been notified to be sold in licensed drug outlets for supportive treatment in management of viral infections BUT NOT as a cure of COVID. ” The statement released on Tuesday read in parts.
Prof. Patrick Engue Ogwang a lecturer at Mbarara University of Science and Technical is the innovator of the medicine and in his previous statement, he also stated that the drug is still under development, not yet a cure of the virus.
Currently the price of the drug has moved up, it started at a price of 20000/- per a bottle of 20mls, now three bottles are at one hundred thousand shillings in Kampala pharmaceutical shops.
The Authority has asked public to inform the latter if they find and side effect of the drug.
