Security has been heightened at Bunjako Beach ahead of the Buganda Royal Regatta, with the Kabaka’s Protection Unit and Police assuring revellers of a safe and enjoyable championship on Saturday.

Captain Hawa Nassimbwa, Assistant Head of Security in the Kabaka’s Guard, said security teams are fully prepared and will work closely with several security agencies to protect the thousands of people expected to attend the event.

“As security, we’re ready to see that Kabaka’s people get enough security on that day and we shall be working with a number of security agencies. We want people to come and enjoy without fear of security threats. I only ask you to follow the guidelines,” Nassimbwa said.

The Buganda Sports Minister, Owek. Salongo Robert Sserwanga, also inspected Bunjako Beach on Friday to assess preparations for the event, which brings together athletes representing all 18 Masaza.

Sserwanga said the regatta is rooted in the historical relationship between Buganda, the Kabaka and Lake Victoria, adding that the championship is intended to promote water sports while giving communities an opportunity to enjoy the event.

“Ssabajja Kabaka, the lake and Buganda have something in common and a lot of history. We’re looking at the sports disciplines played in and on the lake being played and enjoyed by the locals, so I ask the people of Kabaka to come on Saturday and enjoy the boat race,” he said.

The organising committee has also introduced a women’s race as part of efforts to promote gender balance and encourage more women to participate in water sports.

Organising Committee Chairperson Engineer Ben Misagga said competition will start as early as 7:00am with the 1,000-metre race and rowing, while the finals are scheduled for 2:00pm.

The day’s activities are expected to climax at 5:00pm with an entertainment programme headlined by Afrigo Band.

Misagga said the winners will walk away with several prizes, including a boat, a bull, trophies and medals, while other prizes such as boda bodas, smartphones, watches and original Premier League jerseys will also be awarded.

“All 18 Masaza athletes reported today and had a full day of trials and practice,” the organisers said, signalling that the teams are ready for Saturday’s competition.

The Katikkiro of Buganda, Charles Peter Mayiga, Prime Minister Robinah Nabbanja and other dignitaries are expected at Bunjako Beach. There is also anticipation that His Majesty the Kabaka of Buganda could grace the occasion.

With security agencies already deployed and final preparations completed, organisers are calling upon revellers to attend in large numbers while observing all security guidelines throughout the event.
