We were Born not Swimmers, Mukono Residents Threaten to Protest If Authorities Don’t act Against Disturbing Floods

Mukono: The residents of at least two villages, that is Lweza and Nabuuti from Mukono Municipality, Mukono district threatened to protest if the responsible authorities in the area don’t immediately work on the challenge of floods in their area.
Many areas in the country have been receiving heavy rains since mid March this year, mostly the Central districts like Mukono,Kampala and Wakiso.
The heavy rains which would be a blessing to farmers to cultivate, now it has turned into a disgrace after making a number of water bodies flood hence destroying people’s businesses and property.
Among the many people that are greatly affected by the over flow of these water bodies are the people residing in areas of Lweza and lower Nabuuti villages in Mukono Municipality in Mukono district.
The residents of those villages in question, told this website that whenever it rains, the water stream running from Kiko village to Kame village and floods cut off the road that joins Lweza and Nabuuti to Mukono City Center which hardens the transport system.
According to a one Ssalongo Kanabe, a resident in the area,
“The flooded stream doesn’t only make transport difficult but it also destroys property whenever it over flows.“
Ssalongo added that; “if it rains when you still in town, you have to wait for not less than six hours for you to access your home.”
“My sugarcane plantation is at a very high risk of destruction ” a one John a farmer in the area also noted.
Residents informed this website that they have ever raised their issue to concerned authorities but there is no positive response till now and all their efforts seem to be in vein.
They added that both the City Mayor and Member of Parliament of Mukono Municipality Kagimu Fred and Hon Nambooze Betty respectively are aware about this problem because they both visited the flooding stream two years back.
It is on that matter, the people from Lweza and Nabuuti villages asked concerned authorities to help them and renovate the stream before people lose their lives, if not they are to hit the streets to fight for their rights.
