Pepsi University Football League: Katikkiro Mayiga Challenges Muteesa Champions to Prove Their Success Was No Fluke

Fresh from their historic triumph in the 2025/26 Pepsi University Football League, Muteesa I Royal University on Tuesday presented the championship trophy to the Katikkiro of Buganda, Charles Peter Mayiga, at Bulange.

The delegation was led by Vice-Chancellor Prof. Vincent Kakembo and included the university’s board chairman, players, students, and officials who gathered to celebrate the institution’s latest sporting milestone with the Buganda Kingdom leadership.

During the meeting, Mayiga congratulated the team upon winning the prestigious university football title and urged the players to remain disciplined if they are to fully benefit from their football talent.

The Katikkiro advised the players to protect their reputation, avoid alcohol consumption, and stay away from reckless relationships, warning that indiscipline could easily derail promising careers.

He also emphasized the wider importance of sports in society, describing it as a powerful tool beyond entertainment.

“Sports teach self-control, build the body, introduce us to the world, develop talents, provide jobs, and help the government earn revenue,” Mayiga noted.

Vice-Chancellor Kakembo attributed the university’s success to proper planning and preparation throughout the season.

He thanked partners including CBS FM and BBS Terefayina for supporting and promoting the team during their successful campaign.

Kakembo also appreciated the university’s board of directors and fans whose support inspired the players on their journey to glory.

Team captain Jjunju Eddie praised his teammates for their determination and belief that eventually carried the side to the title.

Meanwhile, team manager Ambrose Kalibbala revealed that the university is now preparing for continental and regional competitions.

According to Kalibbala, the champions are targeting participation in the Africa University Games set to be hosted in Cairo, as well as the East Africa University Games scheduled for Dodoma.

“If we get enough finances, our team will be representing the country in Africa University games and East Africa University games,” Kalibbala said.

“Of course we want to prepare more for the next edition of the Pepsi University Football League. Katikkiro told us that we need to prove to the world that we didn’t fluke this trophy but worked for the glory and that we can defend it.”

Muteesa I Royal University clinched the 2025/26 Pepsi University Football League title after defeating YMCA Comprehensive Institute 1-0 in the final played on May 2 at Hamz Stadium Nakivubo.

The decisive goal came from midfielder Sam Mutambo, whose effort secured the university’s memorable victory.

Before presenting the trophy to the Katikkiro, the university held a victory celebration over the weekend at its main campus in Masaka, where the Vice-Chancellor also pledged to expand the institution’s sports programme by introducing more sporting disciplines.
