Pepsi University Football League: UCU Frustrated Again as Kumi University Snatch Vital Point in Mukono

Kumi University salvaged a crucial point against 2019 Pepsi University Football League champions, Uganda Christian University (UCU), in an intense end-to-end encounter played on Tuesday afternoon at the UCU Grounds in Mukono.
The gripping match kept fans from both sides on edge throughout the 90 minutes and eventually ended in a 1-1 stalemate.
UCU broke the deadlock in the 20th minute through Abiti Harry, who unleashed a thunderous right-footed strike from inside the box. The Kumi goalkeeper, Amoni Eddie, failed to keep it out, sending the home fans into wild celebrations.
However, their joy was short-lived as the visitors hit back just seven minutes later. Muthir Saidi, a left-footed defender known for his precision, converted a spectacular free kick from nearly 30 yards, curling it into the top corner beyond the reach of UCU’s custodian Rukaali Norman.
The goal was Muthir’s second of the tournament, adding to his impressive tally of two goals and one assist in three matches — a testament to his growing influence in the Kumi setup.
Kumi’s skipper, Nyongesa Christopher, was instrumental in the midfield, dictating play and calmly distributing the ball across both flanks. His leadership ensured Kumi remained composed, especially in the first half, which ended 1-1.
After the break, UCU came out rejuvenated, pushing for a winner with relentless pressure. Abiti Harry came close twice, while Ssekisambu Reagan’s effort rattled the crossbar, leaving the home fans frustrated.
Goalkeeper Amoni Eddie emerged as Kumi’s unsung hero, producing at least three crucial saves to deny UCU and help his side hold on for a valuable point — their second successive draw against UCU.
The result keeps Kumi University top of Group E with five points from three matches, while UCU trail just behind with four. With only two games remaining in the group stage, UCU’s qualification hopes hang in the balance.
Both teams will return to action next year in the second round — UCU facing Islamic University in Uganda (IUIU) and Makerere University, while Kumi will aim to secure qualification against King Ceasor University and IUIU.
League action continues on Wednesday with Kampala University hosting University of Kisubi in Kampala.
