UOC Elections: We Have nothing to Hide, Secretary General Breaks the Silence on Voters’ register Claims
Last week, this website ran a story where the Uganda Boxing federation president Moses Muhangi claimed about the hiding of Voters’ register away from those who may have interest to contest on different posts in the forthcoming, Uganda Olympic committee elections.
For starters, Uganda Olympic Committee is to hold elective Assembly on 27th February 2021 at their headquarters at Lugogo.
Uganda Boxing federation president Moses Muhangi who has interest in standing as UOC president, said that the current executive adamantly refused to release the voters’s register even though he tried to demand for it.
It’s true I have intentions to contest because when I am in such big offices, it means serving my federation the more.” Muhangi told this website before adding. “However my intentions currently are not so serious because UOC still adamant to release the updated voter register.”
It’s UOC that knows the federations they are in good stand with and those not in Good stand, so as person who has intentions to stand, I would like to know who is eligible and whether I am or not eligible to stand. It’s only the register that can help me, we are remaining with less than three weeks to elections but they are still adamant to display the register putting my ambitions in balance.” Muhangi explains.
This website took another step to follow up the claims, yesterday in an off record conversation with UOC’s Secretary General who doubles as National Council of Sports Chairman, Donald Rukare, NOC has nothing to hide from its members and all the 30, are timely updated about the on going activities in the Committee.
“We have nothing to hide” Don quoted before adding.”Everyone knows that we have 30 members and they are in every annual report we release, surely we have nothing to hide.”
“We are not perfect but we try to do things in a professional way, so Mr. Muhangi should know that we are not ‘bayaye’, at least we have image to protect.”
About why the register is hidden away from public, Don said that the register is public document to their members and all are eligible to have them, and tasked us to investigate from all the members of they don’t have the register.
“All our members received the register, notice and the guidelines, we have nothing to hide from them, let no one lie to you. You’re journalist, go and investigate if the general secretaries of our member federations and associations didn’t not receive them.” Don tasked us.
Don said that any paid up member is eligible to vote according to their constitution.
In the documents, Don tabled to this website shows that the member federations received the communication, boxing inclusive.
Our efforts to have a comment from UBF General Secretary, Simon Barigo went futile since his phone wasn’t on.
However, via a phone interview with Netball federation general Secretary, Annet Kisomose, the federation received the email that has a register of voters, the same to Badminton Association and it’s Simon Mugabi who confirmed to this website.
