Netball Super League: Posta’s Season Win Comes early as Busia Upsets UCU
The 1998 Netball League champions, Posts Uganda surprised many when they registered their first win of the season on match day week two of the 2022/23 season.
On match week two, Posta managed to pip newcomers, Mutelx Life Sport Netball Club by 36-35 in an epic and enticing encounter honored at Kamwokya Community Centre on Saturday.
The 1990s league giants lost their opening fixture against league debutants, Africa Renewal University but on their second attempt, the side came more serious despite a huge pressure and challenge from Mutelx and they needed the last minute strike to separate the tie and won the game by one goal advantage.
“This season we came when more determined, serious and ready to compete” says Posta Uganda assistant captain Nakibuule Shatra “The changes we made this season, as player we said we need to win more games, so we amplified our training and coordination because it was beating us last season. And even the team has added in more players so we expect to perform better this season, at least we expect to be in the top five.”
According to last season’s performance, this time round, Posta has started well. In only two games, the side had equalled it’s last season’s record of winning only one game, it was against KBK and came in late in the second round of season.
Mutelx Life Sport registered their second consecutive loss of the season and the first one came against UCU. However, Nabukalu Rehema, the club’s captain is confident that their first win of the season is just around the corner.
“We played under pressure” Nabukalu confessed. “You when you play under pressure, you lose concentration and your opponent gains confidence, so that also affected us, we are new in the league, we played against experienced team but, we are confident our win is very close.”
Meanwhile, Busia Greater Lions who had a walkover in it’s opening fixture, [Ugx Luweero did not show up], upset UCU Netball club in the last game of the day, Busia came from five goals down to beat the Mukono campus girls 50-48.
Busia first took the first quarter, wining it 15-13, but before half time, UCU changed the results and came on top with 25-27 goal lead, they maintained that lead until the third quarter [36-39] but the last 15 minutes, the energetic, youthful girls from Busia pulled up their socks and changed the results to have a final score of 50-48 and subjected UCU to their first loss of the season.
“It’s like they undermined us, they thought we are an easy side to beat.” Says Nathama Sumayia Zela, the best player for Busia on the day. “We came expecting something, we came to do our best and to make a statement.”
Currently Busia Greater Lions tops the group with four points and the league will return to action on weekend at Bombo Barracks.
