University Games 2023: Kampala University Flagged off to UCU, Promise Medals only

With only hours to the 2023 Inter University games edition to be hosted at Uganda Christian University Mukono, Kampala University has been flagged off today, Saturday by the Varsity’s Deputy Vice Chancellor Dr. Wardah M. Gyagenda. 

DVC flagged off a contingent of 142 and it’s going to compete in nine sports disciplines. 

Dr. Wardah revealed to this website that it’s in their norm to send off their students to games with prayers such that they go and come back in peace and with medals. 

“today we are flagging off our teams for all the different games to go to UCU for inter University games, it’s the culture of Kampala University to flag off our students with prayers, we remind them that in addition to sports there is also manners, so we remind them to go in peace and come back in peace.” She said.

Kampala University came into existence on 16th February 1999 and next year they will be making 25 years in the field of education and sports, DVC asserted that they are using this year’s AUUS Inter University games as one of the activities leading to their celebrations come next year.

“Most importantly, this time is unique, Kampala University on February 16th is celebrating it’s 25th anniversary, so this sports is very important to us, it’s going to be a climax of our birthday which is going to be celebrated in February, so we are very hopeful, very excited and we cannot wait to get the numerous trophies as it has been the case before.” Says Deputy Vice Chancellor, Dr. Wardah M. Gyagenda. 

The University’s sports Tutor, Martha Soigi didn’t different from her boss, she has also promised medals.

“We’re going to feature in nine disciplines, hopefully we are expecting to get gold medals like we have been doing, I have a contingent of 142, among those 121 are athletes, so I thank our prof. Badru Ddungu Kateregga for injecting in money for the athletes to get a chance to play.” Says Martha Soigi, Kampala University Sports Tutor. 

Reactions from the captains. 

“We’re well prepared for University games, both boys and girls have been in serious training, we did a lot of preps, and we are going to compete not to participate, we shall get medals.” Says Ategeka Fred Akiki, captain all boys teams.

“First of all I want to thank our professor and his cabinet for this opportunity given to us, most of our disciplines are going, and we are so happy for this, I am here to let you know that Kampala University is ready to compete, so far we have the best teams and I promise you we are going to win trophies.” Overall captain girls teams, Shakirah Nassaka.

Last edition in 2019 at University of Kisubi, Kampala University won four medals.

This season they’re featuring in football (boys and girls), Netball, basketball, volleyball, darts, swimming, handball (boys and girls).

The tournament officially starts on Sunday at UCU Mukono Campus.
