Stanbic Uganda Cup R16: No Mbabazi on Touchline, No problem, Vipers Sail to Quarters
The three time Stanbic Uganda Cup winners, Vipers sports club have sailed to quarter final of the 50th edition with a 3-0 victory against Iganga Young FC.
Abdul Karim Watambala, Salem Mohammed and Fazil Tumwine converted the three goals for Vipers in the encounter honored on Wednesday evening at St Mary’s Stadium Kitende.
Watambala opened the scoring route for Vipers in the 32nd minute. He calmly converted the penalty they received after a foul on Fumador Asiwome.
The first stanza ended while Vipers in the 1-0 lead.
Ten minutes into second stanza, Salem Mohammed curled the ball at the back of the net following a blunder made by the Iganga defense, the striker extended the lead to two goals for the hosts.
Though they were playing entertaining football, the Eastern regional league side created no clear cut scoring chances in either halves.
Tumwine Fazil who replaced Fumador Asiwome in the the 59th minute, went on score sheet with a simple tap in, in the 72nd minute, thanks to brilliant Karim Watambala cross from the right flank.
Despite going on target thrice, the Venoms have been so wasteful on the day, putting aside the disallowed goal for Tumwine due to offside and the three times they hit the poles, twice in second half and once in first half, Vipers squandered a number of goal scoring chances.
Vipers who propelled to quarter final, they didn’t have their head coach, Livingston Mbabazi on touch line, it was Richard Wasswa in control.
While addressing media, Iganga Young FC Tactician, Kyangata Ibrahim revealed his gratitude towards the performance of his players, though wasn’t happy with referee’s decisions.
“I have nothing to blame on my players, they gave me their best.” Kyangata said before adding. “,We were playing against a big team, many back at home thought that we going to concede many goals but the boys never allowed that and played a good football.”
“However, referee wasn’t that fair to us, many calls were made against, look at the penalty, the foul was on my player but called it against us, maybe it’s because Vipers was the home team.” Kyangata expressed his discomfort with the referee’s decisions.
Richard Wasswa, the day’s touch line coach asserted that the win gave his boys confidence because they played two prior games minus winning.
