Police Arrest 20 Suspects Over Violence at Matovu’s Burial
By Kyeyune Ali
Police have arrested 20 suspects following an alleged attack on mourners, including Kibuku County Member of Parliament Hon. Herbert Kinobere, during the burial of former Busiro South MP Charles Matovu in Kungu-Lutale, along Nakawuka Road.
The arrests were confirmed on Monday by Police spokesperson Kituuma Rusoke during the weekly police press briefing at the police headquarters in Naguru.
According to Rusoke, the violence occurred on October 25, 2026, when mourners attending Matovu’s burial were reportedly targeted because of their political affiliations.
The incident allegedly involved a group of suspected National Unity Platform (NUP) supporters who attacked mourners perceived to support the ruling National Resistance Movement (NRM).
Police intervened to restore order and protect mourners who had reportedly fled the scene to escape the violence. The operation resulted in the arrest of 20 suspects, who remain in police custody as investigations continue.
Rusoke said the suspects would be handled in accordance with the law, with further legal proceedings expected as investigations progress.
Police Condemn Political Intolerance
The police spokesperson condemned the incident, warning against the politicisation of burial ceremonies and other public gatherings.
He emphasised that funerals bring together relatives, friends, colleagues and political associates from different backgrounds, making it unacceptable for anyone to prevent others from paying their last respects because of their political beliefs.
Rusoke noted that a deceased person’s relationships extend beyond political affiliations, stressing that mourners should be allowed to attend burial ceremonies without fear of intimidation or violence.
He further warned that individuals involved in violence, threats or destruction of property would be held personally accountable for their actions, regardless of the political motives they might claim to advance.
Police Call for Calm
Police have urged members of the public to exercise restraint, respect political differences and maintain peace during public gatherings, particularly funerals, which are traditionally occasions for mourning and solidarity.
The arrests come amid concerns about political tensions at public events, where disagreements over political affiliation can threaten the safety of participants.
Police investigations into the incident are continuing. Further details regarding the suspects and any formal charges are expected to emerge as the case progresses.
Meanwhile, the circumstances surrounding the alleged attack and the accounts of those involved remain subject to further investigation.
