Pepsi UFL: ‘The Cathedral is Too Shege’, Royals Dismantle Mukiibi’s Fortress Beyond Repair, Gently March to Historic Final

Muteesa I Royal University produced a stunning performance to defeat St Lawrence University 3-1 and book their place in the Pepsi University Football League (UFL) final, bringing an end to the hosts’ remarkable seven-year unbeaten run at Kavule.

Coming into the semi-final second leg, St Lawrence—under the guidance of Davis Nnono—had not lost a home game since 2019 when they lost 1-2 against Kampala University. But on this occasion, they met a determined and clinical Royal Lions side that rose to the moment.

The visitors showed early intent, with Katende Eric proving a constant threat to the Saints’ defense. After a series of half chances, the breakthrough arrived in the 22nd minute when Katende fired home from the edge of the box off a well-delivered cross from Ali Lutwama.

St Lawrence responded almost immediately. Just three minutes later, Ssemanda Collins restored parity with a powerful free-kick, sending the home crowd into celebration and briefly swinging momentum back in their favor.

However, Muteesa I Royal University remained composed and continued to push forward. Their persistence paid off in the 37th minute when Ali Lutwama curled in a stunning free-kick to restore the visitors’ lead, giving them a 2-1 advantage heading into halftime.

The second half saw both sides create opportunities, but it was the Royal Lions who were more decisive. St Lawrence came close to equalizing, notably through substitute Mukiibi Sharafah, who missed a golden chance in an open net situation.

The decisive moment came in the 66th minute. Katende Eric once again led the charge, dribbling past defenders before unleashing a shot that was parried by goalkeeper Kateete Mohammed. Rwothomio Brian reacted quickest to slot home the rebound, extending the lead to 3-1.

Despite late pressure from the Saints, Muteesa’s goalkeeper Ssemukasa stood firm, producing a series of crucial saves to deny efforts from Okello Ivan James, Owane Yasin, and Ssemanda Collins.

At full-time, the Royal Lions celebrated a historic victory—one that not only secured their place in the final but also ended one of the most formidable home records in university football.

Having joined the Pepsi UFL in the 2024/25 season, Muteesa I Royal University will now play in their first-ever final in just their second campaign. They are set to face YMCA in the final scheduled for May 2, 2026, at a venue yet to be confirmed.

It was a night of history at Kavule—one where giants fell and new contenders announced their arrival on the biggest stage.
