Pepsi UFL: Stoppage-Time Drama Puts Uganda Martyrs Slightly Up as it Gives Muteesa a Second Chance
By Kayiira Jackson
Uganda Martyrs University (Nkozi) secured a hard-fought 2-1 victory over Muteesa I Royal University in an intense first leg of the Pepsi University Football League quarterfinals, in a match defined by early breakthroughs and late drama.
The hosts made a dream start, breaking the deadlock as early as the 6th minute. Ogwang Francis turned provider with a well-delivered ball that found Lagu Richard, who calmly slotted home to give Uganda Martyrs the lead.

The opening half was played at a high tempo, with both sides struggling to settle but showing attacking intent. Muteesa I Royal pushed forward in search of an equalizer, but Uganda Martyrs’ defense stood firm. Lutwama Ali produced a crucial block to deny Allan Odong, while goalkeeper Kibungo Ashraf made a stunning save to tip Twaha Bukenya’s long-range effort over the bar.
Despite sustained pressure, the visitors could not find a breakthrough before halftime, with Uganda Martyrs taking their slender 1-0 advantage into the break.
In the second half, Muteesa I Royal showed urgency, but were repeatedly frustrated by a disciplined Uganda Martyrs backline. Opiyo Daniel led the defensive effort, making key clearances to maintain the hosts’ lead. The Saints, meanwhile, adopted a cautious approach, sitting deep and waiting for opportunities to strike on the counter.

As the game edged towards full time, chances came and went. Busuulwa Patrick and Brian Rwothomio both found themselves in promising positions but failed to capitalize, while Kayanja Joram remained alert in goal to keep the deficit manageable.
The decisive moment came in stoppage time when Allan Odong doubled Uganda Martyrs’ lead with a composed finish, lobbing the goalkeeper before slotting into an empty net to seemingly put the game beyond reach.
However, the drama was far from over. Deep into added time, Muteesa I Royal were awarded a penalty, and Lutwama Ali stepped up to convert, pulling one back and handing the visitors a crucial away goal.
At full time, Uganda Martyrs walked away with a 2-1 victory—an advantage that gives them the edge heading into the second leg, but leaves the tie finely poised with Muteesa I Royal still very much in contention.
