On Tuesday at Nkumba University playground, the 2016 finalists, Nkumba stopped St Lawrence University unbeaten run with a 3-1 Important Victory.
Irivia Mamur brace and Kennedy Ssemambo late strike put a stop at St Lawrence University dominance in Group E of the Pepsi University Football League, 11th edition.
Going into the game, the Kavule boys wanted only a point to seal their qualification berth to quarters of this edition and in only four minutes, Abula Michael had already handed them a goal through a clear header.
The goal had give Nkumba University, the beach boys an uphill task to reverse the result because they much wanted the game more than anything, since they wanted to keep their qualification hopes alive.
The following minutes of first half, St Lawrence were still dominate as well as wasteful, Micheal Abula had a chance to add on his goal, Innocent Matenga and Kembo Osman both had open chances to sink Nkumba’s hopes in the first 20 minutes of the game but they converted none.
Nkumba gained momentum and before scoring, they also squandered three open chances,one for Nsereko Jama, Kennedy Ssemambo and Irivia Mamur.
However, Irivia Mamur leveled the matters in the 31st minute with a nice pressing and three minutes to half time break, the same player had a belter in the top corner of the goal post to hand home boys the lead before the break and he moved his tally to five goals, thanks to Kennedy Ssemambo assist.
Nkumba became more deadly in Second half with the skipper Kennedy Ssemambo taking over the middle of the park, putting St Lawrence University back on standstill.
St Lawrence with the changes made, the introduction of Peter Kaye, they a bit regained the control of the game in the last 15 minutes but again the chances they got, they failed to convert any to level the matters and in the four minutes of added time, Kennedy Ssemambo sealed the victory of the Beach Boys with a hard ball strike and made it 3-1.
The victory brought Nkumba University back in qualification calculations with a game to go, they moved to ten points and if they collect three points from Gulu in their last group game, they will qualify to quarters.
Despite taking away their unbeaten run, St Lawrence University still on top of the table with 12 points, they only need a point to seal their qualification as table leaders, their last fixture is at home against winless IUEA.
