Pepsi UFL: Waisana’s corner-kick magic hands IUIU a Rare Away victory over MIU

Islamic University in Uganda (IUIU) secured a narrow 1-0 victory over debutants Metropolitan International University (MIU) in the Pepsi University Football League (UFL) on Thursday, November 5 at Hamz Stadium Nakivubo.
A stunning Olimpico goal from Waisana Eric shortly after the restart proved decisive as IUIU picked up maximum points in an end to end encounter.
The first half ended goalless, with both sides creating opportunities but failing to find the breakthrough.
MIU goalkeeper Ainomugisha Bright produced an impressive save in the 20th minute, punching away Okiror Emmanuel’s dangerous free kick that was heading towards the far post.
MIU also threatened through Mujabi Douglas, who showcased his dribbling ability to beat Okiror before delivering a poor cross that denied the hosts a promising opportunity.
However, the deadlock was finally broken just two minutes into the second half when Waisana caught the MIU defence off guard with a brilliant Olimpico goal directly from a corner kick in the 47th minute.
The goal gave the visitors the advantage and forced MIU to push forward in search of an equaliser.
Substitute Mwanje Shafik made an important defensive intervention in the 52nd minute, denying Mugambe Faraji inside the box as the visitors wanted to double their lead.
MIU continued to press for an equaliser, with Mujabi coming close in the 70th minute, but his effort sailed over the crossbar.
Seven minutes later, Mujabi was again denied after Bahebwa won possession high up the pitch and set him up for a powerful strike, which was comfortably saved by IUIU goalkeeper Mwandah.
Despite the late pressure, IUIU held on to secure a valuable victory and hand MIU defeat in their opening fixture of the competition.
The newcomers will now turn their attention to their next assignment, where they host three-time league champions Uganda Martyrs University in what promises to be a difficult test.
Meanwhile, Pepsi UFL action continues on Friday at Kira Road Arena, where ISBAT University will host Bugema University.
