Over UGX 32 Million Injected into SOM Easter Open Chess Tournament 2026

The Director of SOM Chess Academy, Robert Katende, has officially announced the third edition of the SOM Easter Open Chess Tournament 2026, with a total investment exceeding UGX 32 million.
The highly anticipated tournament is scheduled to take place on Easter Sunday at SOM Chess Academy in Katwe, Makindye, Kampala, kicking off at exactly 9:00 a.m.
This year’s edition will feature cash prizes distributed across multiple categories, underlining the academy’s continued commitment to promoting chess in Uganda. The tournament is expected to attract players from across the country and beyond, with both rated and junior categories included.
Organizers say the event aligns with SOM Chess Academy’s mission of transforming lives through chess by providing a competitive platform that nurtures talent, discipline, and strategic thinking. Participation is open to all chess enthusiasts at a registration fee of UGX 50,000.
The competition will follow a FIDE-rated format, comprising eight rounds with a time control of 90 minutes plus a two-second increment per move. This format is designed to test players’ precision and decision-making under pressure.
Special attention has been given to inclusivity, with a dedicated category for differently-abled players. Participants across categories will also stand a chance to win additional prizes, including smartwatches, chess boards, learning equipment, as well as trophies and medals.
The tournament will feature several prize categories, including the Open category (top seven winners), Ladies category, Seniors (50 years and above), and differently-abled players.
In a move to enhance players’ experience, organizers have also confirmed that lunch will be provided to all participants—an improvement from previous editions.
Speaking ahead of the event, Katende emphasized the academy’s broader vision: “SOM Chess Academy is committed to using chess as a tool for education, character development, and social transformation. Through tournaments, training programs, and community outreach, we continue to impact lives.”
The initiative is expected to further motivate young players while supporting their growth both in chess and personal development.
