In just two seasons, Muteesa I Royal University has transformed from an afterthought into the biggest story in university football a team whose rise has shaken the establishment and redefined what is possible in the University Football League.
Before 2024, football at the university was limited to inter faculty competitions, with little indication of what the institution could achieve on a national stage. That all changed when the Games Union, led by Ambrose Kalibala, made the bold decision to enter the University Football League in the 2024/25 season. Their entry came at the last minute on the day of the draws marking the beginning of a journey fueled by belief rather than certainty.
The early days were filled with challenges. Top players were reluctant to join, fearing humiliation at a level the university had never competed in before. Financial support was limited, as even the administration was unsure about investing in an unproven project. On top of that, the strict regulations of the league balancing academics, eligibility, and performance made it even harder for the new entrants to settle in.
But what Muteesa lacked in experience, they made up for in spirit.
Their first ever match against Makerere University Business School ended in a narrow 1-0 defeat, decided by what they believed was a soft penalty. Yet instead of breaking them, that moment ignited something powerful within the team.
“That game changed everything. We saw the level and realized we could compete. It gave us belief,” recalled Ambrose Kalibala.
That belief carried them to a remarkable quarterfinal finish in their debut season an achievement that turned heads across the league and began attracting better talent to the squad.
Now, in their second season, Muteesa I Royal University has gone even further reaching the finals in what can only be described as an extraordinary and unmatched rise.
For the team, this achievement is more than progress; it is a declaration.
“Reaching the finals is already a big statement for us. Winning it would make history,” Kalibala emphasized.
Their journey has been built on more than just talent. Discipline has set them apart. According to Dean of Students Paddy Kiganda Ssenkungu, the team has not received a single red card since joining the league a rare feat that reflects maturity, focus, and structure.
Behind the scenes, sacrifices have been immense. Football has demanded both financial investment and academic compromise, with players often missing classes for away fixtures. Many talented students initially avoided the team out of fear that football would affect their studies.
“Football is expensive, and success requires commitment. Both the university and the players have had to sacrifice,” Kiganda explained.
A key force in this journey has been the unwavering support from within the institution, including the influential role of the University Vice Chancellor Professor Kakembo Vincent, whose prioritization of football has helped shape the team’s rapid development.
What makes this story even more remarkable is how far ahead of schedule it is.
“Our plan was to reach the finals in four seasons, but we’ve done it in two. This feels like a miracle like Christmas has come early,” Kiganda added.
Despite reaching the finals, Muteesa I Royal University sees this as only part of a bigger mission. Their ambitions go beyond trophies. To become a leading talent development hub in Uganda, to represent the country at regional and continental levels, to build a lasting legacy in university football, and to produce educated players who can thrive professionally both locally and internationally.
From a team that entered the league as unknowns to finalists in record time, Muteesa I Royal University has delivered a performance that stands unmatched. Their story is not just about results it is about belief, resilience, and the courage to dream beyond limitations.
And as they prepare for the final, one thing is clear: this is no longer a surprise package Muteesa I Royal University is here to stay.
