Likico Emily Opu is a highly experienced Nursing officer and midwifery with 32 years of experience and holds a degree in midwifery science and diploma in management and leadership.
On Saturday, 26, July, 2025 at Forest Cottages – Kampala, Likico Emily Opu a senior worker at Mulago Specialized Women and Neonatal Hospital launched her Book called ” Beneath the Nurse’s Cap”.
The Book delves into the emotional and psychological toll that midwives, Nurses, Doctors, paramedics and therapists endure as they care for others while often neglecting their own well-being.
The book offers practical solutions for healing and it provides tools, models of care and evidence based strategies that can cultivate a healthier work environment and advocate for cultural shifts and leadership support that prioritized mental health in the professional.
“Every Nurse, Doctor, paramedics and therapists and public need to get a copy of this book because Beneath the Nurse’s Cap encourages a broader dialogue on mental health and aiming to transform how society perceives and addresses invisible burdens carried by those who care for others in our professional and also in the entire Ugandan community.” Said Likico.

The book also talks about the light and the Darkness as far as the professional is concerned.
The government of Uganda through the ministry’s health, there is a need to increase the number of Nurses in order to reduce anxiety due to long serving hours.
Anxiety may cause mental illness towards the nurses, doctors midwives which may affect the patients in the country and also there is a need for salary increments for the Nurses, Doctors and also paramedics in order to make them more serious on duties.
Basin on the World Health Organization standards, a midwife is supposed to deliver 175 babies per annum but in Uganda, currently a midwife delivers over 500 babies per annum which causes formatic conditions towards the midwives and this forced Mrs Likico Emily Opu from West Nile to write a book called Beneath the Nurse’s Cap to talk about all challenges they go through in the professional of midwifery.
Opu’s retirement nears and she is targeting to settle on consultancy role as well as sharing her knowledge in books.
