Kho Kho Wave Sweeps Across Uganda as 2026 Growth Drive Gains Momentum

A new sporting wave is sweeping across Uganda, and it is moving with speed, agility, and growing excitement. Kho Kho, once a little known discipline, is rapidly carving its place in the country’s sporting landscape following a breakthrough showcase at the Uganda Secondary Schools Sports Association Ball Games Championship.
What began as a demonstration has quickly turned into a movement
During the USSSA Zonal Ball Games I and Football Championship, the fast paced, tactical sport was introduced to hundreds of students and officials across regions including West Nile, Acholi, and Mpigi. For many, it was their first encounter with Kho Kho but the impact was immediate. The energy, teamwork, and intensity of the game drew admiration, sparking curiosity and enthusiasm among young athletes eager to try something new.
That moment is now being widely regarded as a turning point
In its wake, schools and regional sports leaders have shown growing interest in adopting the sport, signaling the beginning of what could become one of Uganda’s most exciting grassroots success stories.
Behind this rapid rise is the deliberate effort of the Kho Kho Uganda Federation, which has intensified its nationwide development strategy. Central to this plan is a strong focus on coaching. In March 2026, structured training programs were rolled out in key regions such as Sebei, covering districts like Kween, Kapchorwa, and Bukwo.
The initiative has since expanded to include Mubende, Rakai, and Luwero, as the federation builds a strong technical foundation for the sport. Officials believe that empowering coaches is the key to sustaining long-term growth, particularly in schools where talent is abundant and enthusiasm is high.
The momentum is set to continue
Kho Kho has been confirmed as a demonstration sport at the upcoming USSSA Ball Games II, to be hosted at Sacred Heart Secondary School Gulu. The event presents another crucial platform to expand the sport’s reach, inspire more participants, and strengthen its case for full competitive status within school sports structures.
Across the country, from West Nile to Acholi and central regions like Mpigi, Kho Kho is no longer just an exhibition it is becoming a movement. Participation is rising, awareness is growing, and a new generation of athletes is embracing the sport with passion.
With a clear vision from the federation to establish trained coaches, active teams, and competitive pathways in every region, Kho Kho’s rapid grassroots expansion is laying a solid foundation for Uganda’s future on the regional and international stage.
What started as a simple showcase is now turning into a national story one of growth, opportunity, and the rise of a sport ready to run its way into Uganda’s sporting elite.
