Health: Campaign On Total Ban of Single-Use Plastics Launched
World Wide Fund for Nature in conjunction with a number of government ministries, Agencies and Buganda Kingdom, today they have launched a campaign that is aiming at putting a total ban on single-use plastics.
According to research, world over, water bodies contain 300 Million tons of plastics and there is addition of 8 million every year.
So in commemorating the 2021 editon of Earth Hour campaign that started in Sydney Australia in 2007 to fight global warming, World Wide Fund together with government ministries, Agencies, CSO, Buganda Kingdom, Rotarians, Scouts and Green for youth Networks come together to fight and call for a total ban on single use plastics and environmental degrading human activities.
While addressing press at Uganda Media Centre- Kampala, WWF country Director, David Duri said that this year they are operating under a theme; Keep It Green and Clean where they encouraging Ugandans to plant trees as well as cleaning their homesteads.
“Under our theme, Keep it Green and Clean, we want to mobilize Ugandans address the rapid deforestation by planting trees, adopt the use of renewable energy technologies and take a firm stand on plastic pollution in the country.” David Duri, WWF country Director said.
David said if Ugandans and the world don’t raise up against plastics, by the year 2050, there will be more plastics in water bodies than fish.
The Patron Uganda Scouts Association who was also the chief guest, General Katumba Wamala encouraged Ugandans to take serious actions on consecrating nature because future can’t be secured in a distorted environment.
“To secure the future of humanity, urgent decisive, global actions to bend the curve on devastating nature loss should be in place.” Gen. Katumba said before adding. “The scouts movement in Uganda and globally is therefore partnering with WWF and all government agencies to rally Ugandans to take action and save our environment“
WWF with its partners, this year they want to shine a light on deep connections between climate change and nature loss that we can’t beat climate change without protecting nature nor RE-establish a thriving natural world without a stable climate.
The question remains whether Ugandans will comply to the call.
