FWSL: Defending Champion She Corporate Relegated, newcomers Asubo, Makerere survive on Judgement Day
At the commence of the 2022/23 season of the FUFA Women’s Super League, few hoped for newcomers to maintain positions on the top and the defending champion to painfully surrender and drop to lower division.
It has been tears of joy mixed with those of sadness depending on where you belong.
The league of ten teams has climaxed on Sunday with five important games and Kampala Queens was officially crowned champions of the 2022/23 season and on the D-Day, they shared points with Lady Doves FC at IUIU Kabojja playground.
The defending champion and Cecafa zonal CAF Champions League silver medalists, She Corporate never survived this relegation battle and dumped to Elite league after failing to beat Kawempe Muslim at their own courtyard at MUBS Arena Nakawa. They shared points after Kawempe coming from two goals down.
They finished with 20 points but with a negative goal advantage to those of Lady Doves FC who also shared points with reigning champions, Kampala Queens.
Olila High School WFC, the side that had a good start of the season, dropped it’s performance in the second round and they succumbed to relegation and on the final day, they lost to Uganda Martyrs Lubaga WFC, the latter beat the former 3-0, courtesy of Nakasi Latifa, Catherine Nagadya and Brendah Munyana.
Going into the judgement Day, Asubo-Gafford Ladies FC have been the most disadvantaged side, they came into there last game against Rines when sitting ninth on the log with 18 points.
The side wanted a win at home against Rines SS WFC and again pray for Makerere University, She Corporate and Lady Doves not to win if they are to survive.
We might say, God has been on their side, they registered a 4-3 victory in a seven goal thriller at Kampala Quality Ground.
Evelyn Nassuna was the first on target in 9 minutes before Jesca Namanda leveled in the 15th minute.
In the second half, Zaitun Namaganda scored a hat trick and Jesca Namanda scored a double to register two hat tricks in one game, a unique event this season.
Their win against Rines SS WFC and a draw for Lady Doves and that of She Corporate automatically saved the newcomers in Asubo-Gafford Ladies.
Makerere University WFC is another newcomer in the topflight league who survived relegation after beating UCU Lady Cardinals 1-0 at Makerere.
Last season, She Maroons never survived and this has been the first time for two promoted sides from Elite league to stay in super league.
