Coach Ssengonzi David Ready to Restore Unity FC’s Glory

The experienced football coach, Mr. Ssengonzi David, has pledged to do everything within his capacity to restore the glory and competitive spirit of Unity Football Club, a community-based team in Nabweru.
“As the current head coach, together with the backroom staff, the club initiator and founder, Mr. Komakech Steven, we shall work to the best of our ability to restore the club’s stature and firepower,” said Ssengonzi.
The club has assembled a strong squad of talented players and is determined to compete at a high level, with promotion to the FUFA First Division set as its primary target by 2027.
Founded in early 2023, Unity FC is based in the Nabweru community within Nansana Municipality. The club was established not only to promote football but also to address social challenges in the area. Community leaders note that Nansana was once associated with high levels of crime and indiscipline, but the formation of Unity FC has helped engage young people in positive activities, contributing to a reduction in criminal behavior.
Football investment in Uganda often yields limited financial returns compared to other businesses, leading many clubs to struggle or eventually fold. Despite these challenges, Unity FC aims to provide a sustainable football platform for the community while increasing access to the sport within Nansana Municipality. The club also has ambitions of growing into one of Uganda’s respected football institutions alongside established teams such as KCCA FC, Express FC, and SC Villa.
Speaking about the club’s vision, founder Mr. Komakech Steven emphasized that Unity FC is more than just a football team.
“Unity Football Club is about hope and opportunity. The belief and commitment shown by our players will help elevate the club from the First Division to the Regional League. We play football to inspire hope and create opportunities for talented players in our community,” he said.
Head coach Ssengonzi also highlighted the abundance of football talent in Nabweru.
“Nabweru has many talented players, but the community lacked a football club capable of bringing them together. We have also recruited players from outside the area to strengthen and balance the team,” he said.
He further called upon aspiring footballers to join the club.
“We welcome players who want to be part of Unity FC. However, talent alone is not enough—discipline remains our top priority because it is essential for success both on and off the pitch,” he added.
Founder Komakech reiterated that the club belongs to the entire community.
“This club is for everyone. That is why we named it Unity FC. We could have called it Nabweru Football Club, but we wanted a name that brings together sports lovers from Nansana Municipality and beyond. Anyone willing and able to support the club is welcome. Football is an expensive venture, and this is the right time for the community and stakeholders to come together and help achieve the club’s mission of inspiring talented players and building hope for the younger generation,” he said.
With a clear vision, committed leadership, and growing community support, Unity FC is determined to make a lasting impact both on and off the field as it pursues its ambitions in Ugandan football.
