Electricity: Ministry of Energy Dreams, By 2030 Uganda To Be Fully Connected

Ministry of Energy and Mineral development have a target of connecting the whole Uganda before year 2030.

According to 2018 Energy progress report 2018, electricity distribution in Urban areas is at 58% and rural areas at 18%.

While addressing press at Media Centre Kampala on Monday, 30, 2020 about the 15th editon of Energy  and Mineral Week, Minister of State for Energy, Hon. Eng. Simon D’ujanga hinted on distributing electricity to all parts of the country before year 2030.

“Our target is to make sure that every household has access to electricity by 2030.” State Minister said.

“We shall use on-grid connections as well as solar home systems and small isolated mini-grids to reach all Ugandans.” He added.

According to minister so far over 1.526 million households are connected to the national grid electricity.

To achieve their target, Minister asserted that they will continue with the Electricity connections policy where the consumers are connected for free of charge especially when the latter is in 90-meter radius away from an existing low-voltage pole.

“Before such a policy, obtaining a connection attracted a minimum cost of up to 600,000, but now the only cost to consumers is an inspection fee of 20,000.”

Minister also said that the electricity tariffs (costs) will reduce once Karuma power plant is commissioned.

Today minister announced the beginning of the Energy and Mineral week 2020 that is run from Tuesday 1st to Friday 4th December 2020.

And the theme for this year is Enery and Minerals for industrialization, Job Creation and Shared Prosperity.
