Uganda’s top-ranked badminton player Shamika Fadilah has safely arrived in New Delhi, India, ahead of the 2026 World Badminton Championships scheduled for August 17–23.

Fadilah, ranked number one in Uganda and Africa, will begin her campaign in the women’s singles round of 64 on Monday, August 17, when she takes on Malaysian international Karupathevan Letshanaa.

Letshanaa is currently ranked 31st in the world, setting up a challenging opening encounter for the Ugandan star.

Fadilah comes into the championships after a training camp in Mauritius, where she stepped up preparations for her second consecutive appearance at the world’s biggest badminton event.

Speaking after her evening training session in New Delhi, Fadilah expressed pride at representing Uganda and Africa on the global stage.

“I am going to take part in the championship for the second consecutive time and this is a pleasure to represent my country and the continent as well,” Shamika said.

The Ugandan also believes her preparations in Mauritius have equipped her with the confidence and experience needed to compete at the highest level.

“I have been in a training camp in Mauritius. I have learnt a lot and I expect to showcase the best of me, of course, and I am well prepared for the tournament,” she added.

Fadilah is aware of the quality of her first-round opponent but remains focused on executing what she has worked on during her preparations.

“She is a very good player, but I hope to give my best, of course, and showcase what I have been practicing,” she said.

With Uganda and the African continent behind her, Fadilah will be hoping to make a strong start to her World Championships campaign when she steps onto the court in New Delhi.
