City Tyres East Africa Badminton Challenge Serves Off with Bigger Prizes and Massive Turnout

The eighth edition of the City Tyres East Africa Badminton Challenge officially served off today at the Lugogo Indoor Stadium, attracting a record number of participants from across the region.

Over a thousand badminton players have registered for this year’s edition, which will climax on Sunday, October 19, 2025, at the same venue. The tournament, now a staple on the regional sports calendar, promises fierce competition and a festive atmosphere.

This year’s total cash prize has been increased from UGX 8 million to UGX 11 million, reflecting the growing stature and popularity of the event. According to Herbert Bashasha, an official from the Mandela Group of Companies, a total of 125 trophies have also been prepared to reward outstanding performers across all categories.

Participants will compete in several divisions, including Schools, Universities, Corporates, Veterans, Nations, Coaches, and Asians. The Badminton Association of Uganda was represented at the opening ceremony by CEO Simon Magumbi, while SC Villa’s CEO William Nkemba also graced the event as a special guest.

Among the schools set to feature in this year’s edition are Kinawa High School, Mbogo Schools, Kakungulu Memorial School, and Kibuli SS.

The stakes are high, with UGX 1 million set to be awarded to individual winners in various categories.

As the shuttlecocks fly and the crowd cheers at Lugogo, this year’s edition promises not only thrilling rallies but also the continued growth of badminton in East Africa.
