UMU Sports Tutor Bids Farewell After Historic Run of Success
Henry’s departure marks the end of an era at UMU, but his impact will continue to inspire athletes and coaches alike for years to come.

Uganda Martyrs University (UMU) is bidding farewell to one of its most decorated sports tutors, Henry Mary Lutaaya, who has played a pivotal role in the institution’s recent dominance in university sports. Since his appointment in 2022, Henry has guided UMU teams to multiple local and regional triumphs, leaving behind a legacy of excellence.
Lutaaya resigned from his job to further his education abroad though he remained silent of the country he went too.
In his debut season, Henry steered the Mpigi-based university to their second University Football League (UFL) title, while also securing a bronze medal with the football team at the Eastern Africa University Games in 2022.
The following year, UMU showcased its growing stature on the national stage. During the National University Games hosted by Uganda Christian University in 2023, both the football and rugby teams clinched gold medals under Henry’s mentorship.
The success continued in 2024 at the Eastern Africa University Games in Maseno, Kenya, where UMU’s football team struck gold, while the rugby and basketball teams collected silver medals.
The pinnacle of Henry’s tenure came in April 2025, when UMU lifted their third UFL title — his second as sports tutor — cementing the university’s status as a powerhouse in regional university sports.

Henry departs UMU celebrated as the most successful sports tutor in the university’s history, his name etched in the institution’s sporting legacy.
In a heartfelt farewell message, he expressed deep gratitude to the UMU community:
“As I write this farewell message, I am filled with mixed emotions — gratitude, love, and sadness. After seven incredible years at UMU, I have made the difficult decision to move on. I am grateful for the opportunity to have studied and worked alongside talented, dedicated, and passionate individuals in both the ICT department and the sports office.
To UMU management and colleagues, thank you for allowing me to be part of your journey. Your support and guidance have been a constant source of joy and fulfilment. I will carry the lessons learned and the memories made wherever I go.
As I take the next step in my career, I wish both the university and the sports department continued growth and more victories. Thank you UMU for being part of my family and nurturing me into the person I am today. I will miss you all and will forever be grateful.”
