For the first time in history of University football League, Kyambogo University managed to secure a victory of 2-1 against their arch rivals, Makerere University Business School (MUBS) in the 2nd leg quarterfinal encounter honored at MUBS Arena on Tuesday.

Following a 2-1 win for MUBS in the first leg held at Kyambogo a week ago, the latter’s 2-1 victory at MUBS Arena, made the aggregate score to tie at 3-3 and forced the game to spot kicks where Andrew Anakunde pulled out his heroic strokes and helped his side to propel to semifinal for the first time since 2018.

The boy made two important saves in penalty shootouts. 

For starters, the visitors lost the first leg at home 2-1 and were one goal down against MUBS within seven minutes into the game at fully packed MUBS Arena, Ssengendo Sharif was the player who gave the two-time champions in the lead with a cool free kick that came after error made by Kyambogo’s custodian who mistakenly took a goal kick outside his territory. 

However Kyambogo never gave up, with a beautiful low shot from the edge of the box, Nkwanga Joel levelled the matters in the 28th minute and the first stanza ended at square. 

Kyambogo University continued to pile the pressure unto the hosts and the Deo Sserwadda charges, dominated the ball possession and their efforts rewarded them in the dying minutes when Lakba Joram separated the tie in the 90+2 minutes and his goal made Kyambogo to register their first win against 2014 and 2015 champions in nine games both sides met in this league since it’s inception in 2012.

The win meant the two sides were level on aggregate sending the tie in to penalties in which goalkeeper Anakunde Andrew was the hero after saving two consecutive penalties to see his side win the shootout 4-1 and progress to the semi-finals for their 3rd time since 2014.

“We came well knowing that Kyambogo never won MUBS, but we are new and we came to set new records, yes I made a mistake, five minutes into the game and we conceded early but we never lost hope, kept on pressing and when the equalizer came, I knew that the game is in our hands. ” Said Andrew Anakunde before adding ” saving penalties is my hobby, so it wasn’t by surprise to save them because my coaches taught me that when it comes to shootouts, I only need to be focused “

Kyambogo joined St. Lawrence University, Uganda Martyrs University and Uganda Christian University in the semi-finals whose draws will be conducted on Thursday 13th October at 2:30pm.
