FWSL: UCU Target First Win Against Wounded Rines

After failing to finish in the top three side in the 2021-2022 FUFFA Women Super League (FWSL) season, the Mukono-based side, Uganda Christian University (UCU) Lady Cardinals, will officially commence their 2022-2023 FWSL season with an away trip to the Kabaka Kabaka Kyabbagu stadium, as they take on a struggling Rines Ladies team in the second televised match, with the aim of securing the first three points of the season.
However, UCU Lady Cardinals’ season might not go as smooth as many might expect.
UCU Lady Cardinals are one side that lost most of their best players, including Teddy Najjuma to Kampala Queens, Banura, Nakate Cissy to She Corporates, and Hasifa Nassuna who recently joined Kampala Queens.
These departures leave very big gaps in the team, and unanswered questions about whether UCU are still interested in sports, especially ladies football, that takes a lot of money, yet it brings in little or nothing into the university’s coffers.
The other questions that might come up in our heads will be “can the 2018/2019 FUFA Women Elite League champions still compete with the other top clubs like She Corporates, Kampala Queens, Uganda Martyrs, among others with “medium” players like Kwagala Joan, Nakirride Catherine, and Bridget Nabisalu, minus the inclusion of Hasifa Nassuna?”
I guess that is an answer we shall start to scribble down after their game against Rines on Saturday.
Rines Ladies, on the other hand, after losing to Uganda Martyrs 2-0, will hope to avoid the mistakes they made in their match, including the missed penalty, and they will be in search for the first point(s) of the season against a hugely depleted UCU Lady Cardinals side.
The tactician of the Rines Ladies team, Coach Bright, believes everything has been put in place, such as correcting mistakes, mindset change of the players, and is confident that they will pick up maximum points.
“We changed our tactics and corrected our mistakes which cost us last time [against Uganda Martyrs],” Bright said.
“So, we are set for the match since it’s our first home game, and with every player being in good shape, we shall do our best to win,” Coach Bright added.
There were concerns about Namusisi Joan and Wujja, as the players seemed to pick up injuries in the last game, but according to reliable sources from the Namusera-based club (Rines), the duo are fit and will be available for selection this weekend.
The last time the two sides met in Mukono, Rines and UCU shared the spoils in a 1-1 draw.
UCU Lady Cardinals will host Gafford Ladies next while Rines Ladies will vist Olila in Soroti for their next fixture.
