Uganda’s Inspirational Chess Trio Heads to Kazakhstan for Global Olympiad

Uganda will once again take its place on the global chess stage as the country sends a delegation to compete at the 2nd FIDE Chess Olympiad for People with Disabilities, scheduled to take place from October 19 to 25, 2025, in Astana, Kazakhstan.

The Uganda Chess Federation (UCF), in partnership with the Sports Outreach Ministry’s Differently Abled Chess Program, confirmed that three players from SOM Chess Academy’s differently-abled chess initiative have earned the honor of representing the nation at the prestigious international event.

The team, led by Masiko Ezekiel (Captain), includes Nakamya Hannah Musinguzi, Mbaziira Sharif Wasswa, and Seguya Enock, with Mugwanya Wilson accompanying the squad. The contingent will depart for Kazakhstan on Saturday, October 18, 2025, flying the Ugandan flag high among the world’s best differently-abled chess players.

Organized under the International Chess Federation (FIDE), the Olympiad will be hosted at the Paralympic Centre in Astana, bringing together participants from across the globe to celebrate inclusion, resilience, and sporting excellence.

Coach Robert Katende, the founder of the Differently Abled Chess Program, expressed pride in the team’s journey and commitment.

“This is a moment of pride for Uganda and a testament to what is possible when inclusion meets opportunity,” Katende said. “Our players have trained diligently and carry with them the spirit of perseverance and national pride.”

Uganda’s participation highlights the nation’s growing investment in inclusive sports and its continued efforts to empower persons with disabilities through chess. The initiative also underscores the transformative power of sport in breaking barriers and inspiring hope across communities.

The Ugandan delegation extended heartfelt appreciation to all partners, supporters, and organizations championing inclusive sports and nurturing diverse talent across the country.
