The 13th edition of the Pepsi University Football League kicked off in style on Thursday at the newly refurbished Hamz Stadium, Nakivubo, with two tense fixtures that produced drama, resilience, and only three goals on the opening day.
In the early kickoff, two-time winners Kampala University (KU) and reigning champions Uganda Martyrs University (UMU) could not be separated, settling for a goalless stalemate. Despite the lack of goals, the encounter was full of grit and tactical awareness.

Kampala University’s new signing, goalkeeper Wafula David, proved to be the hero of the day, pulling off at least three spectacular saves to deny UMU’s attacking threats. His heroics ensured coach Vincent Tumusiime’s side walked away with a vital point from the opener.
The evening clash, however, produced fireworks as Kyambogo University—returning to the competition after a two-year suspension over fan misconduct—stunned ISBAT University 2-1 despite playing most of the second half with 10 men.

Kyambogo got off to a flying start when Komakech Emmanuel slotted home at the far post in the 3rd minute. But ISBAT responded swiftly through Akantambira Daniel, leveling the score just three minutes later.
The game took a dramatic twist early in the second half when Kyambogo goalkeeper Mushemeza Edgar was shown a straight red card for handling the ball outside his area. From that moment, ISBAT dominated possession, pinning Kyambogo back in their half.
Yet against the run of play, Kyambogo snatched the winner in the 82nd minute through Odong Ivan, who capitalized on a rare counterattack to send the fans into wild celebrations. ISBAT protested that one of their forwards, Katende Bahira, had been fouled in the box moments before the goal, but the referee waved play on, allowing Kyambogo to complete a famous victory.
With the win, Kyambogo tops Group C with three points, marking a dream return to the competition.
The Pepsi University League continues on Friday with 2019 champions Uganda Christian University (UCU) hosting Ndejje University in Mukono.
