Ministry of Local Government Holds Consultative Meeting on Creation of New Districts in Tororo

The Ministry of Local Government (MoLG) on Tuesday convened a consultative meeting at its headquarters to discuss the proposed creation of three new districts and one city from the current Tororo District.

The meeting, chaired by the Minister for Local Government, Hon. Raphael Magyezi, brought together Members of Parliament from Tororo, the District Chairperson, District Speaker, Resident District Commissioner, and LCIII Chairpersons of sub-counties and town councils.

The proposal, guided by directives from H.E. the President and the Cabinet, seeks to create the districts of Mukuju, Mulanda, and Kisoko, as well as elevate Tororo Municipality to city status. This move aims to address long-standing socio-political tensions between the Iteso and Japadhola communities, which have hindered effective governance and service delivery in the district.

According to Hon. Magyezi, both political and cultural leaders from Tororo have reached a consensus on the proposed split, which is expected to promote harmony and sustainable development. Tororo City will serve as a unifying symbol for both communities, retaining the name “Tororo” as a shared and cherished identity.

As the meeting was adjourned, Hon. Magyezi urged leaders to actively engage with their communities before a final decision is made. He announced that a follow-up meeting will be held in Tororo on Friday.

“Let’s subject this to the community before we take the final decision. You are leaders of the people and increasingly respected, but why not listen to the people? LC1 and LC2 Chairpersons, as well as councilors from the 11 sub-counties that make up this area, must be part of this process,” he emphasized.
