Litter Garbage in Kampala, Pay 2M Fine- Minister Amongi Warns City Dwellers

Kampala: Cabinet Minister for Kampala City, Hon. Betty Amongi Ongom sent a strong warning to all City dwellers who recklessly dirty the City by littering garbages.

While addressing press at Uganda Media Center in Kampala on Wednesday, Amongi revealed the that she has directed the KCCA law enforcement to start operations in Kampala dealing with Ugandans who make the City dirty.

According to Amongi, the Amended Physical Planning Act 2020, any person caught in act of making the city dirty is fined with 2M uganda shillings.

 “We are disappointed with the improper disposal management, irresponsible dumping of polythene, plastic bottles ends up blocking the existing drainage system.” Hon. Betty Amongi said before adding. “Members of the public are cautioned about irresponsible garbage disposal in any form. 

Responsible garbage management is our Civic duty and if we want to live in a clean Kampala, we should change now change our  behaviors and as a City, we shall now start enforcing and apprehending all that litter the city and I want to tell the public that fine for littering is 2000000/- under the new physical planning act which was amended in 2020.”

The minister also cautioned developers who construct buildings over the drains.

“We are also going to enforce the illegal construction, some developers construct over the drains and others illegally divert the course of drainage channels and consequently the capacity of drain decrease and maintainence are affected.

I therefore affirm government commitment to deliver a beautiful and sustainable Kampala City. She added

Kampala is ranked among the if not tops the list of the dirtiest Capital Cities in East and Central.
