Katungulu Alamandan: A boy from Mbale, Dreams of Being Seed One on Continent

The most iconic talents in the sports industry do come from a humble background but with their persistence and determination, they always make a difference in the World.

Katungulu Alamandan is one of those younger talents who dream big to see that they achieve their desired targets in life.

The boys from Mbale who started playing badminton in 2008 on bare foot is dreaming to be Africa’s number one and to travel the world.

The 17 year old student of Kinaawa High School Kawempe Campus, is among the under 19 players taking part in the ongoing City Badminton Challenge cup 2023 taking place at Lugogo Indoor Arena.

The form three student who is in under 19 category is targeting to perform better than he did in his maiden edition of 2019. Katungulu who was spotted by Kinaawa High School headteacher from Mbale is targeting to secure at least bronze medal in this tournament.

“In my first edition of this tournament, I was fresh from Mbale, I stopped at quarters but this time, I want at least to stop at semifinals.” Says Katungulu Alamandan.

Apart from securing a scholarship from Kinaawa, Katungulu is priding Badminton,a sport that made him create more friends and moving countries and his last outing was in Rwanda.

He is aiming to be Africa’s number one in the game of badminton.

“At my primary school in Mbale, they had a badminton club, so I was curious to know how they play that game, I decided to join it, so that’s how I came a badminton player and later loved the sport, but in Mbale we play outdoor.”

“My target in badminton is to be the number one badminton player in Africa.” He revealed.

His Tactician and the head coach of Kinaawa High School, Frank Muwaluzi asserted that Katungulu is one of the most talented player, very determined and who loves much of what he is doing, he is citing Katungulu to be one of the best on the Continent.

“I got Katungulu at Kinaawa three years back, he came while having basic badminton, but he is a special talent, who loves to learn, very determined, ambitious and hardworking, and disciplined student.” Frank Muwaluzi lay out Katungulu’s attributes.

“Yes he can be a big name on continent if he continues with that determination and zeal towards the sport.”

Mbowa Najib, also a student at Kinaawa High School confessed that Katungulu is the best at the school and being the school team captain, he encourages them also to play the game.

“Katungulu is good, he loves the sport, as our captain, is the one who always encourage us to go for training.” Says his schoolmate.

Currently the big names in the male category who try to challenge on continent is Uganda’s seed one, Kasirye Brian and Muzafaru Lubega, they recently won gold medals in Kampala International Future Series (doubles)

Kinaawa High School is one of the schools that fielded a team of ten players at different under categories and they are eyeing medals and trophies.

The tournament that served off on Thursday, will have it’s climax on Sunday 29th October 2023.
