EANA Netball Championship: Kampala University Flagged off, Vows to Dethrone WOB

Despite the fact that the netball governing body [Uganda Netball Federation] is no longer in existence in the country due to governance issues, it didn’t deter Uganda clubs to participate in the 2024 East Africa Netball Club championship slated to be held in Dar es Salaama in Tanzania. 

The 2023 losing finalists, Kampala University Netball Club [men] has been among the four teams that were flagged off on Thursday evening at Lugogo Sports Complex. 

The team that is under the stewardship of Jesse Assiimwe has been flagged off by the National Council of Sports Assistant general secretary, David Katende who asked them to represent the country the best way both on and off Court. 

The last edition held in Kenya, Kampala University lost to another Uganda’s giants, WOB Netball Club on final with a difference of two goals. 

However, their tactician, Jesse Assimwe revealed to this website that they have rectified all the mistakes and their sole target is to dethrone the reigning champions and take the trophy to Ggaba road.

“Yes we lost to WOB in Kenya but this time we are very ready to encounter them.” Said Jesse. 

” We have had enough time of training, we have also recruited more good players in the squad and we are hoping to bring back the trophy as well as regaining our lost glory. ” 

The Sports Tuition who also traveling as the leader of delegation of Kampala University, Martha Soigi has thanked the University’s founder, Prof. Badru Kateregga and the Varsity’s head of Finance and Marketing, Suibaha Jolly Kateregga for always allowing to finance the University teams to represent the country.

“We’re just fresh from graduation, that means, there is no money at disposal but I thank our Director, Prof. Badru Kateregga and the Finance Director, Suibaha Kateregga for always standing in to sport the sports and letting the youths expose their talent on different platforms.” Said Martha Soigi. 

The contingent of two officials and 14 players will set off on Friday using road to Dar-es-Salaam Tanzania. 

The others teams to represent Uganda includes; NIC, the tournament defending champions for women, Prisons NC and WOB Male Netball Club. 

The tournament is slated for 12th to 21st May 2024 and they expect clubs from Uganda, Tanzania, Kenya, Burundi, DR. Congo, Zanzibar and Malawi.
