Believers Urged to Embrace Thanksgiving Without Complaints — Archbishop Balwa

Kampala, Uganda — Believers have been urged to uphold thanksgiving in all circumstances without complaining as a foundation for national transformation and personal growth.
This call was made by Archbishop Fredrick Jackson Balwa during New Year prayers held at All Saints Cathedral, Nakasero, where he emphasized faith, repentance, and gratitude as essential pillars for Uganda’s progress ahead of the 2026 general elections.
Quoting Uganda’s national motto, “For God and My Country,” Archbishop Balwa said many Ugandans had dedicated the New Year period to prayer, repentance, and praise, seeking divine intervention to eradicate poverty and improve living standards
“Faith, repentance, and consistent participation in congregational prayer are key to our success as a nation in 2026,” Balwa told worshippers.
The Archbishop announced “The Power of Thanksgiving” as the official theme for 2026 at All Saints Cathedral, urging believers to give thanks in every situation regardless of challenges.
“We should practice thanksgiving in all circumstances, without complaining or grumbling,” he said.
Balwa noted that the year 2025 had been marked by widespread complaints but encouraged believers to turn a new page through prayer and appreciation for God’s blessings. He referenced 1 Chronicles 16:8, calling on believers to praise God and proclaim His works among the nations.
Former Minister for Ethics and Integrity, Hon. Miria Matembe, who was among the congregants, used the occasion to call for respect for human rights ahead of the upcoming elections.
“We have prayed that wrongdoing by the police comes to an end in 2026 as the country heads into presidential elections scheduled to commence on January 15, 2026,” Matembe said.
She urged security agencies to act with humanity during the campaign period and condemned what she described as unlawful security operations, including the December 30, 2025, invasion of the residence of activist Sarah Bireete without a court warrant or formal charges.
“The government should stop arresting citizens without charges,” Matembe added.
Leading the New Year prayers, Archbishop Balwa thanked God for the gift of life and called upon Ugandans to pray for peace and wisdom as the country approaches the general elections.
“God has given us the grace to reach 2026. Let us pray for Uganda and make righteous decisions during these elections,” he said.
The Archbishop encouraged all believers and patriotic Ugandans to participate in the elections without fear, urging them to vote responsibly when the polls open on January 15.
