University Football League: UCU Perfectly Starts Title Defense as Victoria University Gets a ‘Retake in First Course Unit’

After over two years of no action due to COVID-19 pandemic, University Football League returned to it’s feet with epic encounter between Uganda Christian University and debutants Victoria University.

UCU the reigning champions, had a perfect start of the title defense with a 2-0 deserved win against newbies, Victoria University in the game honored at UCU Grounds Mukono on Tuesday afternoon.

Enoch Sekandi became the first player to score a goal in the tenth edition of the Pepsi University League and speed merchant, Isaac Ofoyrwoth became the second.

Though they lost almost the full team that won the 9th edition title, UCU looked a better side on the day with good football display and this explained why they got their first goal only ten minutes into the game.

A well constructed move ignited from the middle of the park, brilliantly Isaac Ofoyrwoth from the right flank released Sekandi who was well position in penalty area who had only one touch to put the ball behind the net to send the fans into celebration.

On many occasions before the break, UCU created a number of goal scoring opportunities but Victoria University’s custodian made classic saves to tame the damages.

In the 68th minute, Isaac Ofoyrwoth with a spectacular free kick doubled the lead for the hosts and finally registered their first win in Group A.

“Today we have been victorious in our first game after two years of rest, it’s true we are the defending champions but that is history now, we are concentrating in the new league, we want to manage every game has it comes.” Said UCU tactician, Jimmy Kintu 

Despite the loss in their first attempt in the league but assistant coach, Victoria University asserted that they picked some positives and he still confident they can make it out of the Group.

“Yes we lost our first game against defending champions but they were not that so good compared to us only that they beat us due to mistakes we made. The goo thing I have watched them practically and we are going to work on that com our next game. I believe we can still get out of the group.

The league will return on Thursday when Kumi University hosting IUEA.
