How Much Are We Getting?’ Allowance Questions Rock She Cranes Camp Ahead of Continental Tourney
With just four days to the 2026 Africa Netball Championship in Kenya, uncertainty over player allowances has surfaced in the She Cranes camp, with players seeking clarification on how much they will receive for the continental tournament.
The She Cranes were officially flagged off on Monday at Copper Chimney, Lugogo, in a ceremony presided over by National Council of Sports Assistant General Secretary (Administration) Joseph Oluga.
The ceremony was also graced by Kampala University proprietor and Patron of the Rock, the men’s national netball team, Prof. Badru Ddungu Kateregga, Netball Uganda President Jocelyn Ucanda and members of the federation’s executive committee.
During a question-and-answer session, She Cranes assistant captain Shaffie Nalwanja asked officials to clarify the allowances the players would receive for the championship.
In response, Oluga confirmed that the government had fully funded the team’s trip but urged the players not to make money their primary focus.
“As the government, we have fully funded the federation, but money shouldn’t be the first priority,” Oluga said.
However, concerns over allowances have continued to attract attention in the national netball setup, with players seeking clarity on what they are entitled to receive during competitions.
Speaking to Voice of Bugerere, Netball Uganda President Jocelyn Ucanda sought to clear the air, saying the players had already been informed about the allowances.
“The treasurer talked to the girls and told them how much they’re going to receive according to what we have got from the government,” Ucanda stated.
She added that the She Cranes players would each receive Shs1.5 million, while members of the Rock, Uganda’s men’s national netball team, would each receive Shs1 million.
“And they know, girls each is going to get 1.5M while men each will receive 1m shillings, and we want to thank government that gave us that money,” she added.
However, a player in the She Cranes camp, who preferred anonymity, gave a different account, suggesting that communication from the federation treasurer, Yusuf Kamulegeya, had not been clear.
“Remember we were not getting the training allowances. They told us that it’s going to be a full package, going to give us the training allowances and the tournament allowance at once,” the player said.
According to the player, when the team later sought clarification from the treasurer, the response did not provide a definite figure.
“But when the treasurer came, we asked him about it and he said that he is also not sure of what we’re going to get. Maybe that’s why Shaffie asked,” she added.
The allowance question comes as the She Cranes prepare for the 2026 Africa Netball Championship in Kenya, where Uganda will be looking to compete for continental honours.
The team is scheduled to travel by bus on Tuesday morning.
