Julian League Second Edition Successfully Concludes at St Julian High School Gayaza
The second edition of the Julian League successfully concluded on Saturday, 13th June 2026, at St Julian High School Gayaza, bringing together old students from different graduation years in a celebration of football, friendship, and school pride.
The annual event attracted a large turnout of alumni who returned to their former school to compete in football matches throughout the day. Current students were thrilled to witness their predecessors showcase exceptional football talent and sportsmanship on the pitch.
The tournament was graced by several notable football personalities, including Joakim Ojera, who currently plays for El Mokawloon SC in Egypt, Bronson Nsubuga of Shabana FC in the Kenyan Premier League, Patrick Mboowa, Alex Komakech, and several other distinguished former students.
Among the notable alumni present was former Makerere University Guild President, Ssentamu Churchill, who featured for his class team, Anointed Stars (2022). Churchill’s presence added prestige and excitement to the tournament as he joined fellow old students in celebrating football and alumni unity. Despite a spirited performance and strong determination from the Anointed Stars, the team was unable to progress beyond the group stages of the competition.
One of the standout teams of the tournament was Team Coach Peter (Class of 2012). The team quickly became fan favourites, attracting loud support whenever they stepped onto the field. Their campaign began impressively with a 3-1 victory over Under Dogs (Class of 2025), courtesy of goals from Bronson Nsubuga, Joakim Ojera, and an own goal forced by sustained pressure.
The defending champions, Avengers (Class of 2018), were undoubtedly the most vibrant team at the event. Their energetic supporters created a festive atmosphere with sound systems, vuvuzelas, and coordinated team spirit throughout the tournament.
Speaking after the successful conclusion of the 2026 St Julian League, the President of the St Julian Old Students Association, Kamya Joel Jessy, expressed his satisfaction with the growth of the competition and outlined ambitious plans for its future.
“We are delighted that the 2026 St Julian League has climaxed successfully. This tournament continues to bring together old students from different generations, strengthening the bond and unity that defines the St Julian family,” he said.
Kamya revealed that the association aims to transform the Julian League into one of the leading alumni football competitions in Uganda.
“Our vision is to make the St Julian League one of the best alumni football tournaments in the country. We are considering introducing a phased format where matches are played from January to June, culminating in grand finals hosted at the school. This will increase participation, competitiveness, and engagement among all old students.”
He further emphasized that football remains an important tool for reconnecting alumni and restoring the school’s sporting legacy.
“We want to use football to create stronger bonds among our old students while reclaiming the sporting pride that St Julian has always been known for. Over the years, our school has produced talented sportsmen who have excelled at different levels, and we want to build on that rich heritage.”
While acknowledging that there is still work to be done, Kamya remained optimistic about the future of the competition.
“Of course, we still have a journey ahead of us, but we are committed to ensuring that the league improves every year. With the support of our alumni, the school administration, and all stakeholders, we believe the best is yet to come.”
Objectives of the Julian League
The Julian League continues to play an important role in strengthening the St Julian community through the following objectives:
- Fostering unity and togetherness among former students of St Julian Schools.
- Building lifelong bonds through sports and recreation.
- Promoting sporting talent and supporting the development of future football stars.
- Reclaiming and strengthening the football legacy of St Julian Schools.
- Connecting alumni with the school community and inspiring the next generation of students at the Maroon Empire.
Growing Popularity
This year’s tournament recorded a higher turnout compared to the previous edition, demonstrating the growing popularity of the Julian League among alumni. Although the number of participating teams reduced from ten in 2025 to eight in 2026, the level of competition was significantly higher, with older and younger generations competing fiercely for the championship.
Championship Journey
The Avengers (2018) entered the tournament as defending champions after defeating Pioneers (2019) 2-0 in the 2025 final. However, they were unable to retain their title this year.
In a repeat of last years finals, the Avengers (2018) defeated Pioneers (2019) by 2-0 score line the same results that separated last editions winners.
Soccer Legends produced a shocking result defeating class of 2012 named Team Coach Peter by 1-0 score line. The later had numerous chances to equalize by all the tries hit poles on several occasions.
In a tightly contested final, Soccer Legends (2024) emerged as the new champions after defeating Avengers (2018) 7-6 in a dramatic penalty shootout following a goalless draw in normal time.
As the curtain falls on another successful edition of the Julian League, the event continues to demonstrate the power of football in bringing together generations of St Julian alumni while inspiring current students to pursue excellence both on and off the field.
