The Legacy Road Safety Initiative in conjunction with Ministry of Works and Transport and other partners have brought the third edition of the Road Safety Marathon slated to take place on 11th May, 2024 at Kololo Independence Ground.
The third edition was launched by the Transport Minister, Gen. Edward Katumba Wamala at the press conference held on Thursday at Hotel Africa.
The former UPDF commander expressed he grievance against the increased road accidents in Uganda and the number of lies they claim every year.
Katumba asked all Ugandans to respond to the call especially the prominent figures and companies, he also promised to help Legacy Road Safety Initiative to move the torch to these companies and people to see that they positively respond to the call.
“We’re all aware of what happens on our roads, we’re talking about this subject which is not new, it touches all of us, this is a very touching subject, as you may be aware, the road clashes and injuries are among the leading causes of death among our youths.” Says Gen. Katumba Wamala
“It’s no longer something we should be proud of as a nation, we have made commitment with UN, WHO to reduce road accident deaths by 50% by 2026 but we are not moving well, we’re not making enough impact and that’s why we’re calling everyone to take this matter as a concern. It’s not a matter of the police, we lose on average, 4600 people in the year between the age of 5 and 35 years and this is the working age.
Therefore it’s with great pleasure and honor for me to launch the 3rd edition of the Road Safety Marathon dubbed run for clash victims, please telecom companies, artists, musicians, the people who are dying are your customers, please come and join this race and as a person i will try to reach out to you.” He added.
The Legacy Road Safety Initiative CEO, Richard Young Were asserted that to main aim of this year’s edition is to look for funds to fund the training of the first aiders who will be placed at black spots at Kampala Gulu Highway.
The marathon will start at 6am at Kololo Independence Ground and the race kit is at 30000/-.
